Locomotor System Regenerative Therapy Unit

Locomotor System Regenerative Therapy Unit

The aim of the Regenerative Therapy Unit of the Musculoskeletal Apparatus of the Hospital Dr. Gálvez is to help patients to minimize the pain caused by musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoarthritis (shoulder, spine, hip, knee …). The purpose is to achieve a significant improvement through specific preparations (plasma rich in growth factors, hyaluronic acid, regenerants of blood flow …)

What is the Plasma Rich in Growth Factors or PRFC

The Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or Rich Plasma in Growth Factors (PRGF, Rich in Growth Factors Plasma) is one of the latest cell regeneration techniques used to accelerate the healing of muscle, tendon and joint injuries.

The rich plasma is obtained from the patient’s own blood from which the growth factors are separated, proteins with a key role in the process of tissue repair and regeneration. We can find growth factors both in the platelets (in the Alpha granules) and in the blood plasma.

Platelets are blood cells responsible for interrupting bleeding in case of vascular injury. They are also a natural source of growth factors and have the peculiarity of releasing these proteins in the same place of injury, providing the ability to regenerate tissues and remodel the extracellular matrix.

This peculiarity of the growth factors of platelet origin makes it a treatment that accelerates the restoration process of the tissues involved, recovering the injury much earlier, even in half the time.

What is the treatment of PRFC?

It is a minimally invasive technique that is performed on an outpatient basis. The patient is given a small dose of blood similar to a common test (between 2 and 8 milliliters) with a small amount of anticoagulant. That blood is subjected to a centrifugation process that allows to separate the fraction richer in platelets that contains Growth Factors.

Subsequently, the richest part is separated in growth factors, discarding the rest, calcium chloride is added to release platelet growth factors and is injected directly into the injured area by joint or muscle.

What is the use of platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) growth factors reduce pain and accelerate the healing of injuries allowing the patient to recover in almost half the time. The rich plasma is aimed at muscular, tendon and joint injuries. It can be associated with surgical interventions, favoring the healing of tissues, such as tendon injuries, crossed knee ligaments, sutures and degenerative lesions.

We can also use the growth factors in isolation in the treatment of muscle pathology, chronic tendinitis, ligament injuries or joints.

For determine the type of treatment previously performed a 3-dimensional scan to detect the problems causing the disease, this study is called “Three-dimensional reconstruction of the locomotor system”
