Genetic counseling

Genetic counseling

At Hospital Dr. Gálvez, we have launched our new Genetic Counseling Unit. This service is considered as a system of prevention, detection and treatment for hereditary diseases. And it is based on informing, educating and offering solutions to individuals and families that have a pathology of this type, or the risk of suffering it.

In what cases do you go to a Genetic Counsel Consultation?

In some families the appearance of diseases that could have a genetic component is observed. These cases usually generate some concern, especially if we consider having offspring.

The main reasons why it is recommended to go to a specialized genetic counseling clinic are the following:

– If your doctor has observed symptoms that may indicate a genetic disease (cardiac, neurodegenerative, metabolic, etc.).

If in your family there has been a case of hereditary disease, hereditary cancer, congenital malformations or chromosomal alterations.
Cancer is a genetic disease that can develop during life, but sometimes we can be born with some mutation that predisposes us to it. This mutation is transmitted to the offspring through established patterns of inheritance, which is why it is very important to study to prevent the disease or diagnose it in the early stages.

The most common cancers susceptible to being hereditary are Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer, and Colon Cancer. Although there are many others: prostate, gastric, melanoma, Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia, Retinoblastoma, thyroid, pheochromocytoma, etc.
